Monarto Concreting Marathon: 2
Saturday 7th August 2010 - from 7am
(open for practice from 2pm)

The priority for our next Working Bee is  -  Concrete grids

The job is not at all difficult – it is just   BIG.   There are 8 panels to pour  8m x 7. 5m

That = 6 cubic metres each, and then there is the In grid.    This is where you come in!!! (see below for more info)

Do you or anyone you know, have concrete flowing through their veins???

We need your help   if you have   concreting skills
We need your help   if you have   concreting tools
We need your help   if you have   a friend or relly with    concreting skills
We need your help   if you have   a friend or relly with    concreting tools

We also need your help to pray to the concrete gods for good weather

Anyone who plans to be part of our Concreting Marathon please contact Greg Stillwell on
0413 599 929 or gforce11@bigpond.net.au as coordination and ordering of concrete relies entirely on how many commit to this task. (this one will be worth putting other things on hold for the day)

The job will be planned around 6 people per panel, so if we get a good mix of 30 people we could easily do 5 panels – more details below

See if you can make this one with your gum boots, shovels and straight edges.

Thanks in advance from the Monarto Karting Complex.

More info on concreting jobs

The grids are designed with expansion joints between each panel and heave pins at 400 centres, greased one end to allow the concrete to move on long summer days. The pre concrete setup is 90 x 45 boxing straight on the ground, “pre levelled” to suit the fall of the natural ground, with two rows of level pins in the middle of the slab. Not difficult, just BIG.

If concrete doesn’t flow in your veins but you’re fit enough and can work a shovel whilst wearing oversized gum boots, then your in the “shovel crew”. This is dragging concrete build up from behind the screeding straight edge (operated by those with the most concrete flowing in their veins). Don’t worry, you’ll be told what to do by the screeder. Each screeder requires 2 shovel crew. And there won’t be any moving concrete around, coz the trucks will chute it in each side of the panel.

Each panel requires 2 “screeders” with 2 “shovel crew” each. 6 people / panel. So there is a need for lots of people to make this happen. More experienced screeders means more panels poured.
You might ask about the finish, Well it gets easier. It’s a bull float finish with a bit of broom so there is lots of grip and finished with a bit of edge treatment and some grooving for crack control.
